I've got some of that teflon anti-chafe tape, but I haven't had time to put it on yet. I'm going to ask Bill whether he can cut off all the channels and put cam locks all around. I'm thinking of leaving the airplane in Santa Monica for a few weeks, to let Bill Heard make a bunch of more substantial modifications to the cowl. No time. I'm looking forward to installing it, getting the airplane instrument certified, and regaining my instrument currency. Their electronic tach isn't approved for the AA1A yet, but they said they'll use my airplane as an example for approval. But getting approval for all-electric gyros is likely to take some time. I haven't had the chance to take any long trips since then. I think those will take awhile, even though the plane looks pretty ratty. I'm afraid if I start pulling wire through the wings it'll be weeks before the plane is back flying. It'll be required for instrument certification. I may have to replace the aging suction pump in order to get IFR certification.

Having minimal IFR equipment will let me depart without scud running. Interestingly, the digital gauge indicates from 2.3-5 psi, depending on throttle position and whether the electric fuel pump is running. If you know a clutch from a choke and a throttle from a petcock valve, now's your chance to show your stuff. It's a real bummer when I want to depart Hayward in the morning, only to find a low overcast, especially since I know the tops are at 2,000, and it's clear everywhere else. The original gauge indicates exactly as it always has, so I know the pressure hasn't changed. It indicates that the oil is somewhat hot, but not at red line. But the original gauge indicates 4-5 psi regardless! I bought the model that includes fuel pressure, so now I have a digital fuel pressure device to complement the original gauge. The whole original cowl design is kinda Mickey Mouse, with cam locks, over-center latches, and flange-and-channel arrangements that wear through the outer skin.
